What is White Sapphire®?

Geoff Acton
FAQs

White Sapphire® is a high-purity cosmetic-grade aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), commonly referred to as alumina, engineered for use as a functional mineral ingredient in cosmetic and personal care formulations.

The material is produced using controlled processing techniques that create a highly uniform platelet particle structure. This engineered morphology provides a combination of optical, sensory and performance properties that are valuable in modern cosmetic formulations.

In topical formulations, White Sapphire® functions primarily as a performance-enhancing mineral powder. The platelet structure contributes to light diffusion, oil absorption and improved product adhesion, enabling formulators to optimise texture, skin feel and visual finish across a range of product types.

The mineral also demonstrates high chemical and thermal stability, allowing it to integrate effectively into both anhydrous and emulsion systems. Its inert nature makes it compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients, including pigments, UV filters, emollients and emulsifiers.

Depending on the grade selected, White Sapphire® can provide specific formulation benefits such as oil control, soft-focus optical effects, enhanced radiance or improved sensory performance.

As a result, the ingredient is commonly incorporated into formulations including:

  • primers
  • liquid and cream foundations
  • pressed and loose powders
  • BB and CC creams
  • skincare products
  • mineral sunscreen systems
  • deodorant and personal care products

White Sapphire® powders are supplied as high-purity cosmetic minerals manufactured under controlled quality systems, ensuring consistent particle morphology and reliable performance in cosmetic formulations.
